Addy couldn't help it. She laughed. This whole situation, while being annoying and bothersome, also amused her for some reason. Or maybe it was just the fact that Jack's face was now entirely covered in mud. "Are you alright?" she asked him once she had stopped laughing.
"This must be your first time getting trapped by a mud pit," she commented with an amused nod. Addy noticed that Jack was still in a sort of lying position, and that was a good thing. "Don't stand up just yet, though," she told him, trying to think of how they were both going to get out of this mess (and boy was it messy!).
"Are you stuck at all?" she asked Jack, wiping a lock of brown hair out of her face and ending up putting a streak of mud on her forehead by doing so. Oh well. "Uhm... if you aren't being eaten by the mud or anything, you might be able to roll your way out. Just stay low." Addy wasn't positive, but she thought that it would help to keep a low center of gravity. She'd read about quicksand before and figured that this couldn't be much different.
While speaking with Jack, Addy had been trying to wiggle her feet and legs around to move the mud a bit. It was slow going and didn't seem to be doing much at the moment, but if she did it long enough then there would be more room for her legs to move. Hopefully it would be enough to get her out of this sticky situation.
((This actually happened to my friend once. We spent a half hour trying to get her foot out of the mud. Great fun, yet very very dirty. lol.))

[[Lol, sounds like fun ]] Jack listened to Addy, not really saying anything incase some of the mud went into his mouth. Although he didn't think so at the moment, this was a funny situation, he would defiantly look back on this and laugh. But at this moment in time, he was not laughing. Rolling to the side he managed to get away from the mud, he sat at the side of it and tried to wipe most of the mud off his face. Once he could see and talk again he thought he better help Addy out "Ok, how are we going to get you out?" Addy seemed to be an expert at this type of thing, after all she did get Jack out. He didn't really want to grab her again, as all the mud from him would go onto Addy and she might not be pleased about that. So instead he stood at the side and waited for instructions.

Addy thought about Jack's question. How was she supposed to get out? "Well... I have an idea," she mentioned, noticing that moving her feet around in the mud to create extra space wasn't really working; the mud just kept going back and wouldn't stay pushed away from her legs. "But it would take a couple hours until it actually worked."
She knew that if she tried to lie down, her body might float to the top. But, since she was already in to almost her knees, it would take a long time. Addy wasn't too worried though. The worst thing that could happen was dehydration. It was impossible to drown in quicksand, unless you fell in face first (like Jack had done...), so there was no danger of that.
Addy tried pulling a leg out, leaning backwards a little bit to give herself a better advantage. She just ended up falling on her butt into the mud, making the whole situation better. She straightened herself up fast enough so that she didn't get stuck even worse, but now her pants were entirely covered in mud. It would take forever to clean.
"I'm taking it that they don't teach you about this sort of thing in med school," she commented, making an attempt to lighten the situation. Addy found it easy to joke around at the moment, but Jack didn't look like he was having nearly as much fun.

"You think they would" Jack said, wiping more of the mud off him. This was very uncomfortable, but there was nothing he could really do until they get back to camp. It wasn't like he carried around spare clothes, and he didn't want to walk around naked.
"But no, we haven't been taught this." Jack thought joking would calm Addy down a little, but she seemed fine as she was. Most people would panic in this situation, think that they are going to die or something. But Addy ... she just laid there and waited.
Looking up in the tree's Jack saw some vine ... this gave him an idea! "I may have a better way" Jack said, walking over to the tree and jumping up. His hand was stretched as far as it could, and luckily enough he grabbed the rope. Now he walked up behind Addy "Sit up for a moment" Jack wanted to tie this around her waist.

Addy turned so that she could see where Jack had wandered off to. She saw him reach up and grab a vine out of a tree, which was pretty much perfect for the situation. She felt silly that she hadn't tried looking for them earlier. But it didn't really matter now. Jack had some vines and she would hopefully be out of this mud pit soon.
"Great idea!" she said with a smile. Addy reached out a hand to take one end of the vine so that Jack didn't have to get any closer to the mud than needed. Coming into contact with it, she grabbed it and started to tie the vine around her waist. "Hopefully this'll actually work," she commented, securing the vine and giving Jack a small nod. "Just don't fall in again," she added with a grin, looking at his mud-covered face. It really was quite ridiculous.

Jack gave a small smile "Don't worry .. I got it covered" Jack did not plan on falling in again, he was going to make sure of it. So, instead of standing by the side and pulling, he walked over to the nearest tree. Lucky for Jack the vine was very long, he threw the other end up and it managed to go over one of the branches.
Now all he had to do is pull, the vine would lift Addy out of the mud, and hopefully the branch wouldn't snap. "Are you ready?" He asked "One ... Two ... Three" And on three Jack pulled as hard as he could, not even looking at Addy, he just kept pulling and pulling.
The vine began hurting his hand, but he tried not to concentrate on that, instead he just wanted to get Addy out.

Addy tried moving her feet around in the sloppy mud so that they would come out easier when Jack pulled. It was a strange feeling to have a vine tied around your waist and feeling yourself being pulled up and out of a mud pit. Addy knew that she'd look back on this moment and laugh (not that she didn't already find the whole thing amusing). But as of now, she was trying to help in any way she could.
She could feel the vine tighten around her waist, but at the same time she could feel herself being lifted upwards inch by inch. Addy unconsciously held her breath as she was being pulled, willing herself to be lighter and easier to pull. Addy tried pulling her legs out and finally, after a sucking, sloppy noise, her legs both came free. "Yes!" she cried, letting her feet drop back down on more solid ground.
Her pants and shoes were entirely coated in thick mud, but at least she wasn't in the mud anymore.

Jack was pleased when Addy was finally out, he hadn't got much strength left in him, but as soon as her feet was out of that mud and she was swung over to safe ground, he dropped the vine in an instant. Looking at his hands he could see all kinds of cuts and scratches where he had held on really tight so that he didn't let go. He shook both hands trying to forget about the pain and gave a sigh of relief.
"You ok?" Jack asked, making sure Addy wasn't in pain in anyway. "Least we got out of that mess a lot sooner than expected" Jack said with a smile, trying to think of the bright side of all of this. If they had done Addy's way they could have been here for hours, and all Jack would have been able to do is sit here and try to keep Addy company.
Now at least, they could head back to camp, get cleaned up and get some rest. Jack didn't know about Addy, but he wouldn't mind going to sleep right now. That had taken a lot out of him.

Addy grinned and plopped herself down on the ground, taking a few moments to just rest. "Yeah, I'm fine. Filthy, but fine," she said, untying the vine from around her waist. Once she was de-vined, she looked up at Jack. "What about you?" she asked him. He didn't look too bad, mostly just worn out. That's when she saw his hands, covered in welts and cuts.
"Oh, your hands," she said, starting to feel guilty that she was the reason his hands were all beaten. Addy didn't have a bottle of water to use to wash his hands with, nor were any of her clothes very clean to wrap them up with. "I'm sorry... uhm..." What was she supposed to do? There was nothing she could do to help.

Jack took a few deep breaths and said "Yeah, I'm fine ... a little tired, but I'm ok" Jack stood up straight and was ready to head off back to camp, he was trying not to think about his hands, as right now there was nothing he could do about it.
"Don't worry ... I'll sort my hands out when we get back" Jack told her, they weren't hurting him that much, so it wasn't too much of a problem. Back at camp he knew where there was some bandages and he could get some clean water to wash the cuts. This way his hands wouldn't get infected.
Now the sun had come out, which was very odd, but the weather had improved a lot. As Jack's shirt felt a little heavy than normal, mainly due to all the mud stuck to it, he guessed that it would be ok to take it off. He tried his hardest not to get any of the mud onto his face while taking it off, and he did a pretty good job. "Shall we head back then?" He asked.

Addy gave a nod at the suggestion to go back to camp. She pulled herself up to her feet and made sure she still had the bag with the waterlogged notes and pictures in it. Maybe once she got herself cleaned up she could go through the notebooks and see if there was anything in them that was still readable.
But the notes weren't the top thing on her mind at the moment. After all... she could hear! Addy wasn't quite sure that she could explain her elation at how much of a good feeling that is. No longer would she have to struggle to hear what people were saying, or worry about her hearing aids, or any of that! She was a normal person now.
She wiped the drying mud off of her hands and looked over at Jack, who had now rid himself of his own mud-caked shirt. Addy didn't gawk or blush at the naked skin; that was just silly. Guys went shirtless all the time, what was the big deal? Instead, she looked up at Jack and decided to give the topic of the black smoke another go.
"So that thing... the smoke... you don't know if its ever done anything like this before?" she asked him as she started walking, taking care to skirt around the mud pit. With her luck, she'd get stuck in it again. Wouldn't that just be great?

"Not that I know of" Jack said, slowly making his way away from the mud-pool and heading in the direction of the camp "I have only seen it a few times. It tried to drag Locke into a hole in the ground one time, the other times it's just chased us and nothing more. Like what we went through, but no one was able to get something back from it. You're lucky."
Jack had never imagined anyone having something so great happen to them. It was like a blind man getting his sight back, although Jack didn't really know what that felt like either. But it must be an amazing feeling. There was nothing this monster could really give Jack back, unless it was something strange like his father or wife. He didn't see this happening, so maybe this smoke-thing couldn't do anything to him.

Lucky. It was a term that Addy had never associated herself with before. If she was so lucky, then she never would have had that accident and became deaf in the first place.
She just couldn't get over it. What exactly was that smoke thing? How did it perform miracles like this? Did it happen to anyone else? And, most importantly, why was no one else trying to figure any of it out? If the smoke could do things like restore her hearing, just imagine what else it could do! Addy wanted so badly to be able to understand the mystery surrounding the black smoke, but how?
As they walked, Addy tried to come up with different ideas on how to learn more about this thing. Was it even possible? "Has it ever actually killed anyone before?" she asked Jack. He said that it tried to drag Locke into a hole, so that was probably a down-side to the monster, but what if it was trying to help? Was this thing really as scary as it seemed to be? However, if it was actually dangerous, Addy would have to re-think her ideas.
She was going to make it her mission to find out what that smoke monster really was.

Jack had been told about Eko's death, but he hadn't told anyone else about it. Telling people would only make them panic and worry. This was the last thing the camp should be doing. But a lot of questions had been asked about where Eko had got to, and Jack had tried to keep the killing a secret. The problem was, Jack hated lying to everyone.
"It has ..." Jack took a deep breath "... Eko" He looked at the floor, not wanting to see Addy's reaction. He hearing had been sorted out by it, so she should have nothing to panic about ... right? Jack had no idea, but he thought it would be a good idea to keep an eye on Addy for these next few days.

"Eko?" That thing had killed Eko? Addy had just been told that there had been an accident in the jungle; she didn't ask any more questions, figuring that it was none of her business. She looked down at the ground as they walked, trying to think.
Why had that smoke monster killed Eko? Then again, why did it kill anything? Was there any reason behind its actions? Was there a reason as to why it had fixed her hearing? What were its motives?
There were so many questions! Each one had to have an answer, but finding them out was going to be the difficult part. It was going to be difficult, but she was going to figure it out one way or another.
Addy started peeling the dried mud off of her arms as they made their way through the trees in silence. There was so much to think about...

Great, Jack thought, now I've killed the conversation and probably got Addy worried about nothing. Jack really didn't want her to worry, if this thing had wanted her dead then it would have done it then and there, it doesn't let you have your hearing back and then kill you. Or at least Jack hoped it didn't.
"I shouldn't worry about it though. As long as you stay out the jungle you will probably never see it again" Jack had never seen it back at the beach, it seemed to stay hidden in the jungle somewhere. Maybe that hole it had tried to drag Locke into was where it stayed. It's home.
"Maybe we shouldn't mention this back at camp. I mean, no one knew you were death right? So no one should notice the difference. It would be stupid to tell people about this and them come out here to try and find it. After all, we don't actually know if it will kill again."

"As long as you stay out the jungle you will probably never see it again"
But if Addy never went into the jungle, she'd never figure out what this thing really was. She'd never learn about why it did what it did. This was like some exciting new animal species just waiting to be discovered. She knew about those kinds of things, had taken classes on observing animals in the field. This would be no different.
All the same, she nodded as Jack spoke, agreeing with what he was saying. "Yeah, wouldn't want all kinds of people out here trying to find it. Might just give it more incentive to show back up."
Addy knew that Jack was just trying to keep everyone safe, but she almost felt like he didn't want people to know about what this thing could really do. If it had fixed her hearing (which doctors had told her was irreversible), what else could it do for someone else? If there was anyone else back at camp that had some sort of problem, shouldn't they know about what the smoke monster was capable of? Jack didn't seem to be thinking about that, though. After all, he was the leader and it was his job to make sure everyone survived. Telling people would only jeopardize that responsibility and would only make things complicated.

Jack was thankful that she agreed. Most people would want to run back and tell everyone, but this could only cause problems. People would want to come out here and find it, try and get there problems cured, but no one truly understood it .. what happens if it did to them, what it did to Eko? Until they learned about it [which wouldn't be anytime soon, maybe not at all] then no one should go looking for it. Jack trusted Addy to keep it a secret.
"There is enough dangers out here without people wandering out trying to find this ... thing" What else could he call it? It didn't really have a name. Danielle had described it as a "Security System", but what the hell did that mean? What was it protecting? Jack had no idea, and he guessed that he never would. The best thing he could possibly do is try to forget about it.
"Can't wait to get cleaned up" Jack said, as the mud started to dry and feel uncomfortable.

Addy smiled when Jack mentioned the desire to get clean. She agreed whole-heartedly. Of course, she hadn't landed in the mud face-first; Jack was completely covered in the stuff. Addy was just covered from about the waist down, which wasn't too bad. Sure, there was mud that had found its way into some very uncomfortable places, but they should be back at camp soon. She couldn't wait to find herself a nice spot to wash off.
"And to think... some people get covered in mud as a relaxation technique," she commented. Of course, those people probably didn't have to walk around with the mud all over their bodies. "I'm not sure I'll be getting a mud bath anytime soon."
Somewhere off in the distance, some birds started singing. Sure, Addy had heard this stuff before, but she'd never heard them without her hearing aids. At least, not since before the accident when she was younger. She smiled a bit at the thought. "You know... I never thought I would be able to walk around and just listen without having things shoved in my ears. It's hard to believe." Addy wasn't positive that this all wasn't a dream. Well... if this was a dream, then she didn't want to wake up.

"And they pay lots of money to bathe in it" Jack said, in reference to the mud bath. Jack had never done it himself, but he knew the whole spa treatment could be expensive. Although, he guessed, that the mud might be a little different to the one they have just been stuck in. "Maybe later we will start to look younger" Jack said, laughing a little.
Addy soon changed the topic back to her hearing, which Jack didn't blame her, if it had happened to him he would go on and on about it all day. It was a real miracle. Good things didn't happen that often around Jack, the only other miracle he had witnessed was being able to make his ex-wife walk again after her accident. Other than that, Jack's life hadn't been so great. He was bullied as a child, his father was a drunk, his wife left him for another guy and the list went on.
