Addy grinned at Jack's little joke. She had seen some interesting trees as well, but it was nothing to go out and look for specifically. There were moments when she wished she'd paid a bit more attention in her botany classes so she'd possibly know a bit more about all the trees and plants out here. Oh well.
She followed Jack, not really knowing where they were heading or if anything was even going to happen. "Hopefully there won't be any polar bears out here," she commented, mostly just breaking the silence. Addy had a sudden image of an Other riding on the back of a polar bear. She smiled a bit at the ridiculous picture in her head.
That brought about thoughts of the polar bears in general, though. What the heck were they doing on this island anyway? This was not the type of climate for the bears. Heck, they had three layers of fur and about an inch or two of fat to keep them warm. Theoretically, they'd overheat in this weather. How did they survive?
Addy glanced upward at the sky, noticing some gray clouds rolling in. It looked like it was going to start raining sometime soon. Addy didn't mind, really. She liked the rain. She just hoped it wasn't going to be a torrential downpour that caused some sort of flash-flood. It would be awful if they got swept away by a sudden stream of mud and water.
"Looks like it's going to rain. Weird how the weather can change so suddenly, isn't it?" she commented, looking around at all the trees around them.

Jack looked up at the mention of rain, "That's not the only weird thing on this island" Jack mentioned, everyone had seem something on this island that had been unexplainable. The black smoke that killed people, the weather changing every so often, polar bears running through the forest, strange people kidnapping children. And the list went on and on.
"Guess we better find some shelter, and quick" Jack looked around and found a huge tree, he moved quickly under it, just in time. It pissed it down, it almost made you think there was going to be a flood of some kind.
Jack looked back to Addy, who was in the rain "Over here, come on!" Jack shouted to her.

Addy hesitated a moment. It had been so hot recently, the cool rain was such a blessing. But she was already soaked and it hadn't even been raining for ten seconds yet. She looked over to the large tree which Jack was now standing under and ran over, getting mud splashed on her jeans as she went.
She reached the safety of the tree, though it was raining so hard that they were still getting wet. Addy pulled a wet strand of her brown hair out of her face, careful to keep her ears covered to avoid exposure of her hearings aids. She really didn't want them to get wet. Then the battery would probably fry out for sure.
"Gotta love the tropics!" commented Addy loudly in order to be heard over the torrents of rain. But what were they going to do now? "Should we try and find a drier spot until this clears out?" she asked Jack, again struggling to be heard over the noise of the rain. Addy just hoped that she would be able to hear Jack's response. With only one hearing aid in, she already couldn't pick up everything. But now with all this rain interfering... well, she hoped it wouldn't be a problem.

Jack looked the opposite way to Addy, trying to see if there was anywhere drier, but this would have made it harder for her to here his response. But Jack had no idea she needed a hearing aid. "I don't think there is anywhere else, we should just stay here until it stops"
Jack turned back to Addy, seeing her soaking wet. But it wasn't like Jack was completely dry, this tree wasn't doing a fantastic job of keeping them sheltered. He shook his head, trying to get the rain to stop falling down his face.
"It shouldn't be long" He told her. The weather on this island was weird, and he often found that once it started to rain like this, it would stop soon after and everything would be normal once again.

Addy watched Jack turn his attention away from her. She could hear the faint rumblings of his voice, but she couldn't make out what he was saying. She strained to hear, wishing that the batteries in her hearing aid weren't so low. What was he saying? Jack turned back to face her and didn't say anything for a moment. Had he mentioned anything important that she should've heard? She had half a mind of mentioning her disability to Jack. What were the chances that he would even care? He was a doctor, after all, and wouldn't treat people differently because of something that was wrong with them. He was a very fair man. Addy considered it for a moment before deciding against it. Sure, everyone was going to know sooner or later once her hearing aids actually gave out, but she wanted to prolong that moment for as long as possible. She heard Jack's next statement and gave a small nod. Addy could hear him alright if he was facing her. But she still didn't have an answer to the question she had asked a moment ago. Did it really matter though? Jack didn't look like he was getting ready to leave their spot under the tree, so maybe they were just going to stay here until the rain let up. Just then, however, there was silence. Addy looked around to see if it had stopped raining, but it was still pouring. There was no way that it could be raining silently. That meant only one other thing. "Shit!" she muttered, not hearing her own voice. Why the hell aren't these things waterproof?! she thought bitterly. Addy put a finger near her ear and tried to wiggle the aid around, but it was no use. Hearing aids are not meant to get wet. This pretty much sucked. ((I learn so much by having RP characters that are so different! lol. I'm such a nerd and have actually researched hearing aids a bit. Silly me. ))

[[Wow that's great! I see you're really getting involved with your character! Not many people do that, I do try and look up medical procedures if i have to do one lol ]] Jack looked around, trying to see if there was any signs of a dry spot. But there was nothing, not like it mattered too much now, he was already soaked through. Turning to see how Addy was he heard her say something, but Jack had no idea what. She had spoke too quietly and the rained had drowned out her voice. "What?" Jack asked, speaking a little louder than normal. The rain seemed to make some noise, so Jack thought he should speak up so Addy could hear him. [[Sorry such a short post, in a rush, I'll make the next one longer ]]

((No worries about size. I understand. )) Addy couldn't stop mentally cursing herself. Why hadn't she thought about this when it started raining? Now this hearing aid was busted unless she found a new battery, which was not going to happen. She looked over at Jack in time to see his lips move. She'd been reading lips long enough to understand his single-word query. As much as she hated doing it, she had to explain her problem. There was no way that Addy could try to play it off and continue going on as if nothing happened. It wouldn't work. "My hearing aid fizzed out," she told him loudly, running a hand through her soaked hair in frustration. Addy knew how to control her volume, but it was tricky since she didn't know how loud to be to be heard over the rain. She thought she was being loud enough, but wasn't positive. "I can't hear a thing." Addy hated admitting defeat, especially when it concerned her deafness. She cursed again under her breath, hating the turn that this day had suddenly taken. She just hoped that her other hearing aid, which was in her bag back at camp, wasn't getting wet. If it was getting too much moisture, then she would be out of luck and would have to learn to live on this island in silence. Again.

[[OH, you know what would be great .. If the island brought back her hearing! Maybe the smoke monster could come along, stare at her, and then poof! She can hear again Just an idea ]] Jack had had no idea she needed a hearing aid. Why hadn't he noticed anything like this? Most people had come to him with there problems so far, but Addy had kept this secret and not told anyone. Maybe she was afraid of what people might think, Jack wasn't going to treat her any different. Although, he would make she he faced her when speaking. "Have you got another one?" Jack wondered. It may be hard for her not being able to hear anything, but if she could lip read this would make it easier. Jack knew he didn't have anything along those lines, he had found a lot of medical equipment, but no signs of a hearing aid. Looking up he noticed the sky start to clear up, typical of this island. "At least the weather is improving" He said point up to the sky.

((Heehee... I was actually thinking the same thing. I've been fiddling around with ideas the past couple days and I think it would be a lot of fun!))
Addy kept her eyes on Jack's face, trying to read what he was saying. She hadn't had to lip-read in a few years, but it seemed to be one of those talents that you never lose. And Jack spoke clearly, which made things so much easier on her.
"I've got another one in my tent, but the batteries are really low; they weren't going to last much longer anyway." Addy was just upset at this whole situation. She felt so vulnerable in the jungle! There were so many noises that alerted people to danger. If something like that came up, she was screwed. Addy just hoped that she wouldn't need to run for her life anytime soon. ((Ha ha! Foreshadowing!))
She felt the rain stop and looked up at the sky as Jack did. The weather was so unpredictable here. She gave a small half-smile. "Well... things can't get much more worse than this." Of course, things were only bad for her. With the weather clearing up, things were just fine and dandy for Jack.
However, off in the distance there was a quiet chittering sound. To the ignorant survivor, it was probably just some sort of jungle insect. But for those who knew the source of the sound, it was nothing but a bad omen. Addy didn't hear it, of course, and was oblivious to the possible danger.

"I guess we better head back to your tent" Jack said, thinking it would be best for Addy as then she would be able to hear again. But as he said this he heard something in the distance, a sound he was too familiar with. Not wanting to set this thing off, Jack slowly raised his finger to his mouth "Shhh!"
It was too late, neither of them had made a sound, but it new they were there. What ever this thing was, it was coming towards them, at an alarming speed. "RUN!" Jack yelled, making sure he was looking right at Addy.
He grabbed her arm and started running in the opposite direction to the "monster". There was no way they were going to be able to outrun this thing, they had to hide. Jack looked around, he spotted a group of tree's which they should be able to squeeze in between.
Holding onto Addy a little harder, so he didn't loose her, he brought her to the trees. Letting go in first. Before following he looked behind, seeing three separate clouds of black smoke, suddenly becoming one. He threw himself into the trees and tried to keep as quiet as possible.

Addy saw Jack raise his finger to his lips in a motion of silence. Her heart-rate quickened; was something coming? She looked around, uselessly straining her ears for any noise. But she couldn't hear anything.
That's when she felt Jack yank on her arm and start running. She didn't ask what was going on. Generally, when a person pulls at you and starts to run away from something, you don't resist. So, after a slight stumble, Addy started to follow Jack and run away from whatever it was that they were running from.
Addy wasn't sure she had ever been so scared in her life. Even her accident when she was younger hadn't been this frightening (or maybe that was just because she couldn't remember it that well...). She ran with Jack, praying that this encounter wouldn't end in disaster.
Jack led her to a group of trees and hurried her in between their branches. It was a tight squeeze for the two of them, but at least they were somewhat hidden. Through the branches, Addy caught a glimpse of a cloud of black smoke looming around their tree. She could feel herself shaking in fear and knew that she was also probably a bit paler out of fright.
Suddenly, there was a quick succession of bright, white flashes of light. Addy squinted her eyes shut to avoid the blinding light, not knowing what the hell was happening. Then there came the sound. It was a high-pitched screeching that sent shivers down her spine. Addy put her hands over her ears, not even worrying about the fact that she was actually hearing this. It was so loud! She stood there with her eyes shut tightly and her hands clamped over her ears, willing this thing to just go away.
And that's just what it did. After about five seconds of the intolerable sound, the smoke started to trickle away. With the sound and light both gone, Addy cautiously opened her eyes and looked around worriedly. Not sure if it was safe to speak, she looked over at Jack, wondering if this was really over.

Jack had seen the whole thing, as much as he wanted to close his eyes, he just kept staring. Looking straight at the light, he saw a series of flashes, of what looked like Addy. He couldn't quiet make it out, as they were there and gone in under a second.
After the loud high pitch sound he blinked and everything had gone. What the hell had just happened?! Jack was so confused, he sat there for a moment or two wondering what had just gone on. This could of black smoke had just chased them through the jungle, flashed a light, made a sound then gone?!
"What the.." Jack trailed off a little. Then he realized Addy wouldn't be able to hear him, looking at her he asked "Are you ok?"

Addy nodded numbly at Jack's question, still trying to figure out what the heck just happened. "Yeah, I think --" She cut herself off in mid-sentence, her eyes going wide in sudden amazement and shock. Had she heard Jack speak? She stopped talking for a moment and just let her eyes dart around. She could hear the gentle wind through the branches, she could hear her nervous breathing, hear the dead leaves rustling beneath her feet.
"Oh my god..." Was this really happening? Addy placed a hand against a tree trunk and leaned against it slightly to hold herself up; her knees felt weak with joy. She could feel her eyes start to water up at the sheer amazement of the moment. "I can't... oh my god. What -- what was that thing?" she asked Jack quickly, trying to slow her thoughts down and form real sentences. Did that thing somehow restore her hearing? How the hell did it do that? Addy was ecstatic and couldn't believe that this was happening. She hoped that it all wasn't some sort of illusion or hallucination. That would be awful.

Jack looked all around to make sure it had gone, when it all seemed clear he got to his feet and quickly looked at Addy to make sure she wasn't cut or anything. She seemed fine, apart from the shock. Jack stepped out of the tree's and held out his hand to help Addy out.
Making sure he was looking directly at her, he said "I have no idea" Jack was a little confused, but a lot of weird things happened on this island and he chose not to question them too much. If he did question everything that happened then it would just get him annoyed and angry as he would never be able to find out the real answer.
"We should probably get back to camp" Suddenly realizing that he wasn't looking at her and she might not have known that he had said anything, he looked up "Sorry, I said maybe we should get back to camp"

Addy followed Jack out of their hiding spot, grabbing onto his offered hand and stepping out of the trees. She listened as he said that he didn't know what that thing was. She actually listened and heard it! She ran both of her hands through her hair and just stood there for a moment as Jack repeated his statement. Addy had heard it both times. She had a shaky grin on her face as she looked at him.
"Jack, I can... I can hear you just fine," she told him. "Like, perfectly." Sure, her statement may not have meant much to many people, but she had just told Jack that she was deaf and now she could hear him. Addy let out a small laugh at the situation. "I can actually hear things." This was a miracle. An amazing miracle.

Jack wondered if this was some kind of joke, he stopped where he was giving Addy a very strange look, then asked "What do you mean?" Surely she couldn't have just got her hearing back? Had she not just told Jack she was deaf?
"Are you having me on?" Jack asked, smiling slightly not sure whether to laugh or not. Maybe this was some kind of joke, maybe she was never deaf in the first place and was just joking. He didn't really understand the joke, but he guessed that people these days did all kinds of jokes he would never come to understand.
But, if she had got her hearing back, this was some kind of miracle! The smoke monster could have done this ... but how? There was no way it would be able to give someone back there hearing. It was impossible ... right?

Addy couldn't stop grinning. What did she care if Jack thought she was lying? She could hear everything! "No, this is real. I've been dreaming of this ever since I was eight, and now..." She let out a happy sigh and reached her hand up to the ear with the hearing aid in it. Addy quickly took the small aid out and, after looking at it in the palm of her hand, she stuck it in her pocket. She didn't need it anymore.
"What are the odds of this happening?" she asked, looking over at Jack. "You're a doctor. Is this even possible?" Well, that was a stupid question. It was obviously possible. But was it probable? That was the big question.
She still couldn't believe this. The shock of encountering the cloud of black smoke seemed to have been eaten away by the joy of having her hearing restored. Addy didn't think anything else could go wrong at the moment.

Jack could not believe this, she really could hear again! "Well ... congrats! ... I guess" He wasn't entirely sure what to say as he had never really spoken to someone who was death and then magically got there hearing back. What else could he say?
"I guess it is possible" Jack wasn't entirely sure as he was a spinal surgeon, not the type to deal with people who are blind. Yet he had never heard of anyone back home who had got there hearing back, maybe this was a first.
"Wow," Jack was still shocked about this "I guess that's great news for you then" Maybe if anyone else had some sort of disability, they should come find this smoke monster and it may cure them.

"This is all just so... so..." Addy couldn't think of a word to properly describe the elation that she was feeling. "It's amazing. I can't believe it!" She rubbed the slight moisture out of her eyes, trying to get her emotions under control so she wouldn't be quite so giddy.
But how could she calm down? She took a few steps forward and found a way to calm herself down pretty quickly. Addy wasn't sure exactly what happened, but with her next step she was almost knee-deep in sloppy mud. "What the--?" Out of reaction, she tried taking a step back but only ended up getting her other foot stuck in the pit of mud.
"Okay, well..." Addy took a deep breath. "This just makes things better, now doesn't it?" What was this? Quicksand? She ran her fingers through the surface. It didn't seem like quicksand. Too muddy. Maybe it was just a big pit of mud that had been churned by the sudden downpour. But, if it was anything like quicksand, she knew that struggling would only make it worse. At least she wasn't waist-deep.
"I've always wanted to take a mud bath," she joked with a grin, looking over at Jack. Addy tried pulling her leg out, but it was no use. She had no leverage. She just hoped that Jack wouldn't come too close and get his foot stuck, too. Then they'd have a problem. But it was hard to tell where the solid ground stopp and the gooey mud began. Which was a problem.

Jack laughed a little, he moved closer to her looking at the floor at all times so that he didn't end up getting stuck. "Let me help" Jack circles around her finding the best spot to help her, once he decided he moved behind her and placed his arms around her.
"Ok, on the count of three I'm going to pull you up" Jack got a good grip on her, but didn't want to squeeze too hard and hurt Addy. "Alright ... One ... Two ...Thr--" As he said three he pulled as hard as he could, but only managed to pull Addy up a few centimeters.
He moved forward a little and slipped on something, trying to keep his balance on one foot, he jumped around. But managed to get closer to the mud pool and falling face first into it.
Jack pulled his face up quickly and looked around, he couldn't really see due to all the mud in his face, but he spat anything away from his face. "Great!"
