Richard, detecting the subtle threat in Jack's choice of words, smiled calmly. Did he really think that if they wanted Claire his people would be able to somehow resist them? "Well, that's good to hear. And how is their relationship? Have they formed a maternal bond or was Littleton reluctant in responding to the child? Is she breastfeeding the baby?"
Claire seemed to be an anomaly, as did her child. He was the first person born on this Island since.... well, in a long time. Perhaps she held the key to Ben's birth problems. And once they were out of the way they could get back to doing the important work. Jacob's work. Maybe Ben should be persuaded to take her again. There would be numerous benefits in studying both her and the child. Was the fact the baby was conceived off-Island really the answer? Or did Littleton have an immunity to whatever it was that killed the mother and foetus?

Lately, Jack had been getting on with Juliet's people, they had been nice to him and treated him like one of there own. He had almost forgotten about how much he hated them for what the did to Claire, Charlie, Ana Lucia, Libby and many many more. But Richard had brought all those thoughts rushing back to him. He tried to remain calm, but all he could keep picturing was Charlie on the ground and Jack giving him mouth to mouth. He hadn't given up on him, he had brought him back.
"They're doing great" Jack said, not really understand why all these questions were being asked. "Yes, she is breast feeding him" If these people were going to try and take him again, then Jack couldn't hesitate in killing Ben. They had caused her enough trouble, taking her when she was still pregnant and injecting her with God-only-knows-what.

"That's very comforting to know. I assume your people are a lot more community driven than us. Was it hard for you all? Crashing here and then being forced to club together into your own little Crusoe club. with Smokey chasing you through the jungle?"
Yes, Claire would be a good idea. Richard was attempting to divert the conversation onto other topics, bringing up the trauma of the crash and the fear of the Guardian. Richard laughed lightly, to alleviate the tension he saw building in Jack's neck. "Still, he can't get us in here. Did Juliet tell you the fence keeps him out? He doesn't like the sound."

Was this guy being an ass on purpose? Jack didn't know, but he was starting to get on Jack's last nerve. He took a deep breath, in an attempt to calm himself down, and answered "We were all fine. Well, until you people thought it would be fun to kidnapp a pregnant woman and try to kill Charlie."
Jack couldn't sound any bitter. He was now pissed off. The day had started alright, he had found where he would be living for the next few days, and enjoyed a nice tour with Juliet. Now this guy had to ruin it all. The temptation to throw him into the fence was strong, but he couldn't ... they wouldn't let him off the island if he did.
"So ... smokey ... what is he?" Jack said. It was worth a shot, right?

Richard frowned. He could understand Jack's frustrations, but didn't see the point of them.
"What do you care about any of it? Why does Charlie, or Claire or anything matter? If you really cared, if you truly felt for them....... why are you leaving them behind?"

Juliet could tell that this conversation was not going to end well. Deciding that now would be the best point to intervene, she took a step forward, almost standing between the two men. Jack just looked angry and frustrated, Richard looked... impassive. She didn't understand him.
"Hey, why don't we all just stop talking about things that'll only make things worse, okay?" Juliet looked from Jack to Richard, meeting both of their eyes as she did so. She didn't want them fighting.
Trying to change the subject to something a little less threatening, she turned to Richard. "So why were you out here again? Just out for a walk?" Juliet hoped that the two boys would just drop the previous argument. She doubted it, but she hoped they would.

Jack could see Richard was avoiding his question, and by the looks of things trying to piss Jack off even more. Just as he was about to loose it with this guy .. Juliet stepped in. He let her finish, and tried to let the conversation drop, but he couldn't. Looking over Juliet so that he could stare straight at Richard, he said..
"What am I supposed to do? Huh? Go back to them, stay on the beach and wait for you guys to ... well, kill us or whatever it is you want to do." Jack paused for a second, giving him an evil look "No, the only way anyone is getting out of here is if someone goes back to the real world and gets help."
Jack knew that no, saying that, they may not let him leave. But he had Ben's word, and surely he wouldn't go back on that. Besides, it's not like none of them hadn't guessed he would do that. "And don't give me any of that you wont find the island crap."

Richard smiled at Juliet as she stepped in. She was quite the pacifist when it came to this Jack. He recalled seeing her spending a lot of time when it came to his food in the Hydra, and also the rumours she had asked him to kill Ben...
"We're not going to kill you Jack. If we wanted you dead would we have let Hurley go back at the Ferry? Or let Kate and Sawyer escape? Believe me, if we wanted you dead... you would be."
He put on his calm face, the blank look which had deeply disturbed the DHARMA members his people had captured years ago. "And when you leave this Island Jack, when you get back out to sea and are on your way to land," Richard stepped closer to Jack, moving around Juliet until he was standing directly beside her. "You don't come back. Not now, not then, not ever. It just doesn't work like that."

Juliet just barely kept herself from flinching when Richard mentioned Kate and Sawyer's escape. They were safe because of what she had done. Because she had killed Danny. She'd done it all in the hopes of getting out of this place. It wasn't something that she was proud of (and she had the scar to prove it), but it had been necessary.
She wondered why Richard was (seemingly) trying to pick a fight with Jack. She knew him to be a pretty decent guy, but this...? What was his motive?
At the mention of never returning to the island, Juliet couldn't help but interrupt. "If you can never get back to the island, then how are you here? You and Ethan came to get me from Miami. How did you find your way back to the island if it's impossible?" she asked him. Juliet wasn't trying to be threatening. That wasn't it. Now she was just curious. Why couldn't you return to the island? Or was this just something Richard was telling Jack as a scare tactic?

Jack was going to come back here, he was going to rescue each and everyone of them. Nothing Richard could say would stop him, he was getting off here, and he was going to make sure everyone else got home to there families as well. Jack didn't want to fight, far from it, his plan was the lay low and not cause any trouble, but it looked like Richard was looking for trouble.
Instead, Jack thought he would be the bigger person, he decided to leave it and not let Richard enjoy watching him squirm. But, it seemed Juliet was going to stick up for him, so Jack listened. He said nothing, he wanted to see Richards reaction. His own people were turning against him. If he could get everyone in there little village to do the same then everyone could leave and come as they like.

Richard turned an impassive face to Juliet. She really shouldn't have asked that question in front of Jack, but Shepherd must have already figured out his People had some form of contact with the outside. He smiled calmly at Juliet and said evenly "You know how Juliet. The same way you came here, and the same way you two will be leaving. But that way only works if we let it." He turned back to Jack and sighed. "I'm sorry if I got us off to a bad start, Jack. Its just, y'know, hard to teach an old dog new tricks. Ben told us you were the enemy for quite a while and, well, I guess I sort of went on the offensive a little." He took a swig of water and nodded to the Jungle. Out there, somewhere in the dense clusters of greenery, Jacob lived, and Richard had to meet him.
"Maybe we could go out for a hike someday? Bond a little and see if we can find what you were looking for."

Jack was surprised at Richards sudden change of heart, but he wasn't going to argue against him anymore. "Don't worry about it. I guess the same thing happened our end. We thought you were the enemy, and if things had gotten much worse there could have been some kind of war" Jack was joking, of course, he would never want to go to war with these people for one good reason. They knew this island a lot better than the survivors did.
"The hike sounds like a good idea. I guess you know which house is mine, come around anytime and I'd be more than happy to go on a hike." Maybe if he went with Richard he would learn more about this place, this guy seemed to know nearly everything about the island. Maybe he was the one to ask questions, get answers. Juliet seemed as much in the dark as he did.

Richard shook Jack's hand again and smiled at Juliet.
"And now I really should be going. I've been away for a few days and living on guavas. I need a cheeseburger."
He laughed softly and headed towards the Barracks, waving good bye to the two as he went. As he neared the suburban style houses his mind was rushing with ideas. Maybe Jack could help him find Jacob, and even if he couldn't he had given Richard valuable information on Claire... information which could see an end to Ben's paltry birth problems and a return to the real work.

Juliet watched as Richard walked away, replaying one of his statements in her mind. You know how, Juliet... But that way only works if we let it. How did they control who left and came to the island? Was it all done by the submarine, or was there something more to it?
She shook her head slightly and sighed. "That man... really confuses me sometimes," she said after a moment. She looked up at Jack. "He can be a great guy, really, but then he gets into his strange, cryptic moods and he gets really hard to work with."
"But, if everything goes right, then it won't really matter anymore," she said with a small smile. They would be off the island and she'd never have to see Richard or Ben or Tom or hear about Jacob ever again. She'd be home. And so would Jack. Then it wouldn't matter anymore.

"You're right" Jack said with a smile. Thinking about it always brought a smile to his face, being free from this island, being back with his mother. He could give his father a proper burial when he got back, although right now .. he was unsure about where his body was. It would just have to be a closed casket, then no one would know.
"Anything else fun around here?" Jack thought it would be a good idea to relax a little now, he didn't want to argue with anyone else. From now on he would keep low, avoid almost everyone. Maybe just stay in and play the piano. Soon enough, he would be miles away from here.
"Or anything else I should be aware of ... you know, something else that could kill me?" Jack didn't want to find any other surprises like this fence. He had to stay alive for a few days longer.

Juliet smiled over at Jack. "No, nothing else much will kill you around here," she told him. Well, nothing that was blatantly obvious, anyway. But there weren't many more 'surprises' like this around. At least, none that she could really show Jack.
"As for showing you anything else..." Juliet looked around, wondering if she really should show Jack the submarine or not. He was going to see it in a couple days anyway, so what would it hurt? "I suppose I could go show you how the two of us are going to be leaving this place, if you'd like," she suggested, knowing that Jack would be interested.

"That sounds great" Jack hadn't been told how he was getting off this island, so it had been yet another mystery to him. But now he was finally going to see how he was getting away from this place. Why hadn't Ben shown or told Jack anything about it? Maybe Juliet shouldn't be doing this .. well, Jack wasn't going to argue against it.
"How are we getting off this island?"

((Not a problem. )) "Same way I got to this place. Hopefully, though, we won't have to be unconscious for the trip," she commented with a smile. "It's pretty disorientating to drink of glass of orange juice mixed with with a tranquilizer in an office room and wake up strapped to a bed in a submarine. Not quite as exciting as they make it out to be." Juliet had finally let it 'slip'. The sub. Now Jack knew. But she was being quite honest when she displayed her concerns about making the journey while still conscious. She'd hoped that they wouldn't have to both be knocked out for the ride home. "I could take you down to the docks where it's at if you'd like," she suggested, looking over at Jack. She probably shouldn't have even told Jack that there was a submarine, but Juliet didn't really care too much at the moment.
