Juliet let out a small laugh at Jack's incredulous question. "Jack, they tell me everything I know to do my job. The smoke wasn't in my job description, so I don't need to know anything about it," she explained. She couldn't remember how many times she had demanded answers to something only to be refused. There were countless moments when she had demanded to leave the island, especially when she'd been told of her sister's cancer, but she had always been denied.
"Ben is one of the only people on this entire island who knows what's going on and what everything is." It was just him and Jacob. Ben took orders from Jacob, and everyone else took orders from Ben. There was no questions asked. Most of the time.

Ben is one of the only people on this entire island
Jack gathered from this that there was a least one other person that knew the island secrets. Maybe this other person would be more useful, but who else could it be? Ben was there leader [as far as Jack could tell] and who else would he tell? Isabel, the woman who was the sheriff on the other island?
Jack had no idea, but he wanted to find out. He needed to prepare himself for if he didn't get off this island, if Ben did lie to him and not keep his word. Jack needed to find a back up plan, he needed to know there weakness and turn everyone against Ben.
"I guess we can head back then" Jack said, with a small shrug. He had seen everything there was too see here. Taking one last look at the fence he saw someone across the other side. Jack rubbed his eyes, to make sure this was real and he wasn't seeing things, but when he looked back the man was still there.
Moving closer he saw who it was ... but it couldn't be ... dad? Jack wanted to chase after him, he was moving towards the forest, but the fence. It would kill him! He moved as close as he dared, "Wait!" He yelled. But it was too late, he had disappeared into the woods.
Jack had seen his dad one of the first days they were on this island. But he had just guessed that it was due to dehydration and that he was seeing things. Maybe not ... there was only one way to tell "Did you see him?" Jack turned to Juliet.

Juliet turned away when Jack suggested that they keep moving. "Is there anything else that you'd like to...? Jack?" She stopped moving and looked behind her. Jack was still standing there, staring at a fixed point beyond the fence. What was he looking at? Juliet looked in the direction of his gaze, but she could only see trees.
That's when Jack started moving closer to the fence. What the hell was he doing?! "Jack!" Juliet ran over to him, grabbing onto his arm, making sure he wasn't about to go any closer to the fence.
"Did you see him?" Jack looked like he'd just seen something impossible. Juliet looked over again, but there was nothing there. She kept a hold of his arm for safe measures and slowly looked back at Jack.
"See who?" she asked him cautiously, not wanting him to have a bad reaction to whatever was happening. "Jack, there's no one out there."

Jack didn't want to come off as crazy to Juliet, but he knew what he saw! His father was there! Taking a few deep breathes he looked at Juliet and said "Nothing, thought I saw ... something .... but it was nothing" Jack didn't want her to think he was some kind of wacko that kept seeing people who were dead.
Looking back to the forest he saw nothing, his father must have gone deeper in. Damn it! Jack still couldn't help but wonder how that was possible, his father had died in Sydney, and now he was here. When Jack had found his coffin it was empty, but that didn't mean that he was wondering around. His body could have just fell out when the plane crashed. Still, there was something in the back of Jack's mind that wanted him to believe that he was still around.
"Sorry... errr..." Jack had forgotten what they were talking about. " .. yeah, so what else is there to see around here?" Jack moved away from the fence. During that he had noticed Juliet grab him, which showed she must have cared for him, even in just a little. Most people wouldn't have done anything and just let Jack die, at least that way it would be one less person to look after.

((This is the part where we start making things up about Juliet.... lol. Should be fun.))
Juliet's eyes studied Jack's face. She saw his disappointment that she hadn't seen whatever was out there. She could tell that he wanted to be believed, to not be treated like a crazy person. But there hadn't been anyone out there.
She suddenly remembered something that had happened to her during her early weeks on the island. Juliet had been out just walking along the fence line when she saw a person on the other side. It had been Edmund, her ex-husband. She'd been shocked, just as Jack was now. Edmund was very dead. She'd been there when he had gotten run over by a bus. Juliet had always felt like it was somehow her fault that he died. If she hadn't felt the need to gloat...
Juliet ignored Jack's question as he tried to get back to a previous topic. She slowly let go of his arm and looked up at him, staring directly into his eyes. "Who did you see?" she asked him, wondering if there might be some sort of connection between what he was seeing and what she had seen a couple years ago. Maybe Jack had seen his ex-wife, Sarah. Or perhaps it had been his deceased father. Upon further thought, it couldn't have been Sarah. Jack had asked her if she'd seen him. Logically, it had to be Jack's father.
The connection between Edmund and Christian? They were both very well dead and off the island. Then how were they showing up here?

Jack didn't want to talk about it, but it seemed Juliet didn't want to drop it. Now he was going to look like a complete fool, but if he didn't say anything then Juliet would get annoyed and go on and on about it. So, with a small sigh, Jack answered "My father..."
Jack paused, thinking about it. "But that's not possible because ..." He stopped, remembering that Juliet knew more about him than he did. There was no need to explain, Juliet knew what he meant, he knew that he had died in Sydney and that he was on the plane. Maybe she didn't know about him finding the coffin in the jungle with his body gone. But that wasn't important right now.
"It doesn't matter ... It must have been my mind playing tricks on me" Jack lied, knowing that really, he had seen him.

Juliet nodded as Jack spoke, noticing how reluctant he was to keep on this topic. Her mind kept going, though. Why were they both seeing dead people? There had to be a reason. Was it guilt? Or was it just the island playing tricks?
"I don't think its all in your head, Jack," she said told him softly, looking out on the other side of the fence. Juliet didn't see anyone, but she remembered the time when she had. It had only happened that one time, but the memory has stuck with her.
She took a deep breath, letting it out slowly. Should she tell Jack about her experience? It would at least make him feel less like an idiot if he knew that it happened to someone else as well.
Keeping her eyes directed at the fence, she started to speak. "Not to long after I came here, I was out walking along the fence, just doing a routine check-up," she said, forcing herself to keep her voice calm and steady. "I thought I saw someone on the other side of the fence. When I looked... it was my ex-husband. But I knew it couldn't have been him, because I'd seen him get run over by a bus just a few months beforehand, went to his funeral." Juliet blinked, trying to keep her emotions at bay. "Yet there he was, just standing on the other side of the fence. Then... then he was gone."
Juliet looked up at met Jack's eyes for the first time since before her story began. "So you're not crazy, Jack."

((OOC: Hope you don't mind me stepping in!))
Richard pushed a few branches out of his path and left the jungle. He stood in front of the dull, steel pylon with its sonic generators sticking out like teddy bear ears. He sighed as he looked at them, he sighed every time he looked at them. DHARMA had ruined this area's natural beauty. They had marched in with their construction vehicles and their saws and they had destroyed this Island... but it survived. He knelt forward and tapped in the deactivation code and turned the fence off before strolling through and reactivating it. Things had changed since DHARMA's arrival.
He heard a laugh to his right and turning saw Juliet with a tall man he instantly recognised as one of the survivors of flight 815. He decided he would go over and introduce himself. Perhaps this one would be the one...
"Hello Shephe... Jack." Richard smiled warmly. Now Jack was with them it would do to stop referring to him as though he were a test subject. "I'm Richard. Richard Alpert. Its a pleasure to finally meet you, I've been following your career with great interest." He turned and half-nodded to the woman, "Juliet."

Jack couldn't believe this, so maybe he wasn't seeing this, but how was this possible? They had both seen someone dead, on the other side of this fence, just out of reach. Jack didn't believe in ghosts, but his father was dead. He had seen the body. There was no way he could come back. As for Juliet's husband, from what he gathered, he hadn't even come to the island.
Before Jack got a chance to say anything, he heard a voice behind him, slightly shocked he turned to see someone that he hadn't yet met. The guy seemed friendly enough, then again most of these people were once you get to know them.
"Nice to meet you" Jack held out his hand to shake. This man had been following his career? Although it seemed strange, this was the least of Jack's worries. "Juliet was just showing me around" He didn't want them to think Juliet was doing anything wrong or helping him escape in any way.

Richard took Jack's hand and shook it warmly before turning to face the direction they had been looking in. "The jungle is pretty fascinating. Have you ever explored it Jack? I mean, really explored it? Its really... beautiful." Richard turned towards the village once more and began walking away. He raised a hand in farewell and called back, "And you might find something you never knew you were looking for."

Juliet nodded in acknowledgment as Richard walked over. He was a pretty... interesting... man. He had been here longer than Juliet had, and he really seemed to enjoy it here on the island. She didn't know too much about him, only enough to get by on small conversations here and there.
However, as Richard started walking away, his statement startled her. It was almost like he knew what she and Jack had just been talking about (which wasn't entirely impossible, she didn't know how long he'd been around before he decided to introduce himself). He was always so cryptic.
"Have you ever found anything, Richard?" she called as he kept walking, not really expecting much of an answer from him. Probably some sort of riddle or half-answer. He was good with those.

"No ... I haven't" Jack told him. He wish he had been out there a little more, but what with all the weird happening in the jungle, it was always safer for him to stay at camp. "Don't think I will get chance to either, but it looks beautiful" Jack told him.
As he began walking away, Jack gave him a small wave. He was ... strange. The last thing he had said really struck him, did he know more about these island secrets than Juliet did? Maybe he was the guy to talk to about and learn more about the island. Later he would leave his house and try and find him, but right now he was enjoying his time with Juliet and getting a tour of there village.

"Have you ever found anything, Richard?"
Richard stopped and turned to her. The woman was young, far younger than most of the others who had come to the Island, and she knew so little. "I found peace, serenity and happiness. But recently... let's just say I'm not through searching just yet." Richard walked a few steps closer to the pair and looked from Jack to Juliet. "What about you Juliet? What have you found?"

There was something about this conversation that bothered Juliet. The way that Richard was talking made her feel like there was some secret that he wasn't letting them know about. She hated not knowing what was going on (one of the many reasons she hated living here).
At the question, though, Juliet just gave Richard a small smile. "I haven't been out there much, Richard. I'm just here to work. But I haven't found anything amazing out there yet." She'd just told Jack about the time when she'd seen Edmund, but she'd never told anyone else. If Richard wanted to know specifics, he'd have to be more specific in his questions.

Richard returned her smile. He had nothing against Juliet, and she was in fact one of his favourite trespassers. Still, one couldn't be too careful.
"Y'know, the population of this Island just got a whole lot bigger." He turned his eyes pointedly to Jack. "Your arrival brought another 48 people here, one of which was pregnant. I'm sure if you look hard enough you'll find someone interesting... it is a small world after all."
Juliet was stringing him along, trying to make him say something he shouldn't. He smiled at her again and took another sip out of his canteen.

Jack didn't know what was going on between these two, but it seemed they didn't like either other. Not at all. Jack kept quiet, not wanting to get involved as he knew least about this island so probably wouldn't be able to put up any argument against either of these. Why did Richard bring up the survivors? How did he know Sun was pregnant? These people knew so much, sometimes before even they knew. Jack didn't like him mentioning Sun was pregnant, they had already tried to take Claire, maybe he was hinting at there plan to take Sun. This was not good. Not good at all.
But what could Jack do? He was stuck in this village and had no way of contacting them back at camp. Yet, he had to find a way to warn them that the Other's might be coming for them. He needed the code for this sonic fence. But where would that really get him? He had no idea which way to his camp was, this island was huge and he would easily get lost. Damn it!
Jack stood in silence trying to think of a way of getting a message to Sun.

Again, Juliet felt like Richard's words were dripping with a hidden meaning. She slightly tilted her head to the side in polite interest when he talked about the plane crash, how one of them had been pregnant. He knew all about Claire and the tests that they had run on her. She thought about bringing it up before she remembered that Jack still had no idea as to the real reason Claire had been kidnapped (that whole thing had been a misunderstanding, anyway).
But Juliet really wanted to know what the hell Richard was going on about. Jack was about to hear some new information and she was positive that he would ask her about it all later. Oh well.
"Claire? She ended up having a normal pregnancy. We ran the tests and there was nothing abnormal about the baby and they both seem very healthy now," she commented. "It's a miracle that they both survived at all." Maybe that was the 'interesting' part that Richard was talking about. Aaron wasn't supposed to survive, nor was Claire, and that was the most interesting thing to Juliet. But that was her field of work, so of course she found it interesting.
Then again, the 'interesting' comment could also mean something entirely different. Why did this man have to be so vague? She wished someone would just give out straight answers every once in awhile.

Richard raised an eyebrow at the news. Like all of his people he had been following Claire's pregnancy in detail. She had arrived pregnant, Ethan had tried to save the child and took her, and he was shot by one of them. She escaped from the Staff and returned to her people, where it appears she was perfectly fine.
"She conceived off-Island didn't she? And they both survived? That's very interesting. Have you asked Jack what he knows about her pregnancy? Any abnormalities while she carried, or during labour?"
Richard's interest was piqued. While he didn't exactly approve of Ben's focus on the birth problems, he was perplexed as to how this Littleton woman had managed to deliver a healthy child and remain alive. Had Ben been informed of this? Had Jacob?

Juliet gave small nods at Richard's first two questions. Yes, Claire had conceived off of the island (which proved one of the points she had been trying to make to Ben) and both she and the baby were alive and healthy at the moment. Juliet had wanted to run more tests on Claire, but she had somehow managed to escape.
When Jack was brought into the conversation, Juliet kept her face calm. She wasn't going to show that she didn't even think Jack should be hearing any of this conversation. She had to stay collected. But now that his name had been brought up, there was no choice in the matter. Juliet would have to confront Jack about Claire. She felt a little bad, knowing how confused he must be. She'd have to explain it all to him at one point.
"Jack? Claire and the baby. They're both doing fine, right? Nothing has been wrong with them, in your professional opinion?" She hated bringing Jack into this, but... oh well.

Jack let out a small sigh as Juliet mentioned Claire. So they only knew about Claire, well ,... obviously, as they had kidnapped her and attempted to take her baby. But that was beside the point, maybe the had no idea about Sun. She had to try and keep it a secret, thankfully she had chose not to tell many people. Maybe these people wouldn't find out about it and everything would go smoothly.
But why were they talking about pregnant abnormalities? Is that what they were injecting her for? Did they want to make Aaron abnormal? Maybe run tests on him and see how he copes with the abnormality? Jack had so many questions he wanted to ask, but he knew he would get no answers. These people never gave anything away, so why would they start now?
"Claire is fine. I'm sure she will remain this way as long as she stays there" Jack said, sounding very bitter. What he was trying to say was stay the hell away from her! But he chose to remain calm and civil.
