Jack stood near the hole that they had been digging all day, it had been hard work, mainly because they didn't have the correct tools. Some of the survivors had put together some make-shift shovels, but it had still taken them the best part of the day to dig this. But they had to give Boone a proper burial, like all the other that died on this island.
Now, at the bottom of the hole, there was Boone's body. He looked so peaceful, his eyes shut and most of the blood had been washed off his body and clothes. Jack stared at him for a moment or two, almost forgetting about everyone else around him.
He soon snapped out of it and looked up at everyone. Many people were crying, especially Shannon, she hadn't stopped crying all day. But Jack remembered how upset he was when his father died, he had tried not to show it, but deep down he really did miss his father.
"We are all here to say goodbye to Boone. He was a great friend, always wanted to help people. I remember the first time I saw him, he was trying to save Rose, he was a good man. I never really got to know him all that well, but if someone else wants to say a few words ... " Jack trailed off a little, hoping someone would take over.

Seeing Shannon was too distraught to say anything, and no one else was speaking up, Jane felt the need to fill in the awkward silence.
"Boone was a great guy. He always had something positive to say. If someone was upset, he would come and talk to them or just listen. He cared about people and tried to keep us happy. Especially Shannon. Boone loved his sister very much and always tried to look out for her."
Jane peeked at Shannon ands saw the tears falling down her face. Jane then looked at the others. They needed to speak up. It was one thing when someone died on the island that was alone, but when they left someone behind, that person needed to hear the words from others about the one they lost. They needed to hear how their loved one would be remembered.

[[He loved her a little too much lol]] Jack nodded as Jane spoke, there had been an awful silence before she had come forward. Jane always had something positive to say about everyone and that was one of her great qualities. Jack looked over the rest of the group, hoping that someone would say something. He knew how hard it was to find the right words, but the least they could do is say something. Jack's speech wasn't the greatest, but he felt he should say something and try to make Shannon feel a little better. Not entirely sure what to do now Jack stood there, looking up at the sky. Hoping that someone would say something more, otherwise this was going to be one short funeral, and not one Boone deserved. He must have made some friends while on this island ... anyone but John Locke, who hadn't appeared yet.

Laura stood near the grave, holding her rosary. She looked at the grave and felt a tear rolling down her cheek. Death was something Laura never liked, especially for a young man like Boone. She only talked to him once in awhile, he was very nice young man. Very protective of Shannon.
Shannon was crying at her spot too, Laura also heard Jane say a few words and then saw Jack nod his head. Laura looked back at the grave. She then crossed herself and said a slient prayer, folding her hands in front of her. Her red hair blew in the wind and her black jacket was keeping her warm. She felt her vans shoes digging into the sand.

Jin stood infront of Sun holding her hand by the hole. Jin stared down at Boone. Jin liked Boone ofcourse, he never harmed him or Sun in any way..but he hardly knew him. It was always sad to see someone just go on the island, because you know it could happen to you or someone else you love on the island. Jin looked up a little bit at Sun, then at Jack and Jane who spoke. Jin took his attention to every person who spoke. Jin wished he could speak aloud if only he knew the proper english and the want to do it because of the tiny relationship the two had.
Jin put his head down in honor of Boone, he prayed for a long rest of peace for Boone. He held tighter on Suns hand. He held up her hand and lowered it as he lifted his head up. Jin rubbed his eyes, and looked at Boone for the last time before they would bury him, saying his last goodbyes in his mind. Jin knew that Sun had helped Boone, and tried to save him from the urchin needles Jin uses for fishing. It did help, but not enough to save him. At the time Jin was helping Claire, Kate and Charlie with the new baby Aaron. Jin felt like one person was put to death and the other was just born.

Piper looked around at the group of people surrounding the grave. She hadn’t known Boone that well, the only conversation they’d shared was about what types of candy they’d eat first when they got back. And the only reason they’d shared it was because he’d for some reason offered her a candy bar. It was just a silly little conversation about getting rescued.
But Boone wasn’t going to get rescued.
She felt like she needed to say something. She knew how awkward funerals could be, she could still remember her Mother’s well. It had been too rushed, too structured. She’d written a poem for her, but she hadn’t been able to get up and say it. She’d always regretted that. Would she regret saying nothing about Boone as well?
She looked around and caught Jack’s eye. She held his gaze for a moment, then took a deep breath. It was now or never.
“I-I didn’t know Boone that well.” She faltered, aware of everyone’s heads snapping towards her direction. “I wish I had though…But…he was always nice to me. He helped out when you guys went on the trek….” Her voice trailed off as she desperately tried to think of something else to say.
“Even though I didn’t know Boone much, I knew that he was always helping out. I saw him helping people, and that’s how I’ll remember him.” She paused, “as someone who always tried to do the right thing, as someone who helped.”
She fell quiet and looked at her feet, heart beating furiously. She wished Jack would say something, after all he was leader-he needed to finish.

[[Wow, Piper .. excellent post!]]
Jack thought now would be a good time to end this, people were getting very upset and it was clear to him no one else wanted to say anything more. It was hard, he knew, and Boone would be missed by everyone. Taking a step forward, he nodded to Piper and said "Thank you"
Jack then knelt down and grabbed a hand full of sand, he threw it over the blanket that was covering Boone. "We'll all miss you Boone" And with that he picked up one of the shovels the survivors had made and began burying him. Most of the people walked away, it was hard work for Jack to do this on his own, hopefully someone would help him out. But he would understand if no one did, he carried on, keeping his head down, and trying to get this done as fast as possible.

[[thanks Jack, this website is awesome! ]] Piper wanted to leave with the others, to go to her quiet spot on the beach and try and forget what had just happened. But something held her back. She could see Jack out of the corner of her eye, trying his hardest to bury Boone as fast as he could. She felt bad for him. It must be awful being the leader and having the bury one of your people. She wondered if Jack felt responsible for Boone’s death? When her mother had died she’d blamed herself, even when she’d known it wasn’t anyone’s fault. She looked for ways in which to blame herself, and when that didn’t work she’d blamed the hospital. But death was no ones fault, it just happened. Slowly she walked towards Jack, and without a word picked up a makeshift shovel and began to help burry Boone.

Jack spotted someone out the corner of his eye picking up the other shovel. He stopped, wiped his hand across his forehead, and looked across. There was Piper, someone he had never really spoken too much since being on this island, he had seen her around a lot but never found the chance to sit down and get to know her.
"Thank you" He said, as he threw a few more shovel loads on Boone. Now at least the blanket covering his body was not visible anymore, all he had to do was finish it up to the top and then he could go back to his tent. With Piper helping this shouldn't take too long.
Jack slowed down his pace a little, getting tired, but chose not to stop. He had to finish this, Jack couldn't save him ... but he did try and give him a decent burial.

Laura crossed herself one last time and pushed her hair out of her face. She saw Jack burying Boone and Piper helping him. Laura Then decided to gather flowers and or anything else that would make this more cheerful and to put on Boone's grave. She looked around along the edge of the beach and Jungle and tried to look for some flowers to get.

It was only when they were almost finished Piper decided to say something, the silence beginning to get to awkward.
“My mum died.” She said quietly, not looking up at Jack but at the same time she knew he was listening. “I was only 16, and I thought she was gonna be fine, like always.” She paused, shovelling some more dirt into the almost finished grave as she did so.
“At the funeral, I didn’t know what to do. It was too rushed, too structured….I wrote a poem but I never got up and said it.” Now she looked up, forcing herself to stare into Jack’s eyes.
“I guess that’s why said something here…but,” she gestured around with her right hand. “I think you did a good job…with this I mean.” she looked down at the mountain of sand which was now covering Boone. She was hot and sweaty from all the work but she didn’t mind.
“I think you’re a good leader Jack.” She said at last, feeling like the man would need some encouragement after this.

Jack looked over at her at the mention of her mother. He stopped throwing sand onto Boone and listened. Jack wanted to say something along the lines of I'm sorry, but he just never found the right time to say it. He didn't want to come across as rude and interrupt, but then again he didn't just want to stand here in silence and not say anything. The best thing to do is probably just to wait.
Jack nodded along. When she seemed to have stopped Jack added "I'm sorry... about your mother I mean" He didn't mean he was sorry that he was a good leader. Damn, this wasn't going well for him. He never did know how to react or what to say to someone who has recently lost a loved one or friend. Jack had lost his father, and all people kept saying to him was that they were sorry, in the end this got annoying and Jack just didn't want to talk about it.
"Thank you though ... I thought Boone needed a proper send off" Jack told her. "I wish ... I just wish I could have done more" Jack looked down at where Boone was buried. Maybe if Jack had tried harder Boone might still be here ... he couldn't help but keep thinking this. Going over and over the moment in his mind, the moment Boone awoke and told him not to take his leg off. Jack should have done more.

Piper gave Jack a sad look, she couldn’t help it. Did he really think it was his fault? She sure knew what that feeling was like…
“Jack,” she said softly, leaning on her shovel and staring at him intensely. “How can it be you’re fault? I mean, you did everything you possibly could.” She paused, trying to think of a better way to explain herself.
“Look, when my mum died-I blamed myself, and when that didn’t work I blamed the hospital. I went there and started yelling at the doctor, because I just couldn’t accept what had happened. Because it had to be somebody’s fault!” She took a deep breath, trying hard to keep it together. She always got emotional when she talked about her mum-either that or she seemed totally detached. But she wasn’t going to cry, she wasn’t weak like that.
“And you know what he said to me?" she continued. "He said ‘death is no-ones fault. People go when it’s they’re time. We don’t like, and we don’t understand it, so we search for reasons, and reasons lead to blame. But sometimes, there is no reason, sometimes something just is. So you shouldn’t go on blaming, you should just accept and move on.’” It was something she’d recited to herself over and over. A little piece of wisdom she would never forget.
That sometimes, things aren’t always your fault.
“Boone knew what he was doing,” she said, maybe a little too strongly, but she wanted to get the point across. “Whatever he did, he knew there were consequences. He knew what the outcome could be and I guess he accepted it. You tried you’re best, we all know that.” She brushed a few lose strands that were bothering her away from her face. “so you gotta stop beating yourself up over it.”

Wow. That was a lot to take in. Piper was right. Everything she had just said was right, it made so much sense and helped Jack realize a lot. People had died around him all his life, being a doctor he shouldn't have expected to save everyone, and no one had ever put it like that before. When breaking bad news to people he never knew what to say, how to put it that someone they had loved had just died. But when Piper put it like that, it made it seem not to so bad, it showed no one was to blame. Jack gave a short, quick smile at her. Now was not a happy occasion, but what she had just said made Jack feel a lot better.
"You're right Piper" Jack told her "Thank you ... I guess you seem to know what your talking about. It was just Boone's time to go." Jack said, Locke may say it was the sacrifice the island demanded, but he was wrong. The island had nothing to do with this.

Lani had stayed in the background during the funeral, as usual. She had never been fond of funerals, and other than the make-shift funerals here on the island, she had only ever gone to her sisters funeral. Even now, she stood back, trying to make herself step forward. She hadn't spoken up at the funeral, although she wished she had.
She had only spoken to Boone a few times, and every time he had been very nice. He had been one of the first people there to talk to her. She walked forward after everyone had left, but stayed back while Jack and the other woman, Piper, buried him. She wanted to help, but...it made her uncomfortable. In her hand she held a small board with a piece of sketch paper attached to it. Lani had sketched a picture of Boone to place on his grave.
So now she stepped forward as the two finished burying Boone. "Excuse me..." she said softly. She placed the board upright, about halfway in the sand, so that it would stay up. As she did, she couldn't help hearing the last things Jack said. She disagreed about it being Boone's time...but then, since her sisters death, she hadn't dealt well with death. Under her breath she muttered a small prayer in French, and then stepped back, looking down at the sketch, which was an almost perfect likeness of Boone.

Piper watched as the girl-Lani she thought her name was, placed something in front of Boone’s grave and stood back.
Piper now saw that it was a beautiful sketch of Boone, amazingly life-like and detailed.
“Did you do that?” She asked in admiration.

Jack stood back and let Lani do whatever she wanted to do, he had noticed her at the funeral. Maybe she was there, he didn't really look around much. All he really noticed was the people who stood forward and spoke about Boone, he was actually surprised as Lani seemed like she would have said something.
Jack leaned against shovel, taking a break from his hard work.

Lani turned her head slightly and looked at Piper. She smiled sadly and nodded lightly, "Yes...I sketched it..." One arm hung lamely at her side, while her other hand was up, holding the charm on her necklace. It was given to her by her sister on their 16th birthday...just two weeks before her twin had died.
She spoke softly again, "I...I didn't know how else to honor him...I've never been very good with funerals and deaths..." She sighed sadly and ran her other hand through her long brown hair, "...otherwise I would've said...something..." Even now she wished she had spoken up.

Piper wasn't sure what to say. She didn't really know Lani, but she thought the picture was a beautiful way of honouring Boone.
Lani seemed to be a bit upset that she hadn't talked during the funeral. People did things in different ways, there was nothing wrong with that she guessed. Not sure what to do, Piper tried to make Lani feel a little better.
"I'm sure Boone would be thankful...it really is a great picture."

Jack stared at the picture, it really was great. He couldn't believe that she had done this herself, Lani really did have a talent. Jack took a seat on the sand and rested. Today had been hard on everyone and Jack had gotten very tired, he needed to rest.
"I'm going to head off to my tent" Jack said, giving a smile and nod to the two ladies talking. "See you later" He got up off his feet and made his way over to the tents.
