Piper undid her seatbelt and leaned over, looking out the window at the fluffy white clouds below.
This was the second time she’d been on a plane. Seven hours ago she’d caught a flight from Perth to Sydney. But now she was on her way to her real adventure-and she couldn’t help but be excited. Not only was she was living one of her dreams-but one of her mums. She knew her mum would be proud.
Two weeks of fun in America lay ahead of her. First she’d see the sights of LA, before cruising along with her tour group across America.
It was going to be awesome.
She had planned the whole thing herself, using a small part of her inheritance for the trip. It hadn’t been hard keeping it a secret. Her stepdad wanted little to do with her, and she had learnt as long as she continued to keep her camouflage and change as little of her schedule as possible, he wouldn’t suspect anything.
Her best friend Bree had been harder to fool though. Piper had felt bad about lying to Bree, she knew her friend wouldn’t stop her, but she knew what Bree would do.
She would try and convince her to let her come as well. She’d ask her to wait a little, let her save up the money for a year then they’d go together. Except this time there would be no together, because this was something she had to do alone. She needed to do it alone.
She hadn’t left much behind anyway. She hadn’t had much. All her clothes were packed with her, her photos and mothers jewellery she had left in a safety deposit box back home in Perth, Australia.
I’ll hang around a bit longer, if I like it in America, Piper told herself. Maybe she could work in one of those summer camps or something. After that she’d go back to Australia. Rent a small place somewhere maybe, get a job and start her life for real.
Tearing her eyes away from the window she looked around at the people in the plane. A few rows in front of her two kids were arguing with each other. Across from them a bald man was snoring loudly, while the person next to him read the newspaper.
Three rows behind her she spotted a man in his thirties with dirty blonde hair a scowl on his face. She wondered why he was so angry. Maybe he didn't like flying?
She turned away from the man and reached into her backpack for the book she was reading: The Power Of One. This was the 8th time she’d read it, but somehow she never seemed to get tired of it.
Opening it to page 42, she settled down for what she thought would be a problem free ride…
