10 year old Laura sat at her desk in her mom's apartment in Hell's Kitchen New York. She was finishing her homework some school as the sun was about to go down on New York City. Mom hasn't been home yet, she's still out with David, her new beau. The 7th guy to some into her life in the past 2 months. Laura really didn't like how her mother would go along with guy after guy to find the right one, what was wrong with her father?
Then she heard the door opening and closing, along with drunk laughter and snickering. They were home and drunk to the point of passing out. Laura knew how this was going to go down. She had her backpack ready by her side on the floor, with a fresh batch of food and clothes, along with her blanket and jacket.
"Laura.....you have some mail..." Her mom replied in a drunk voice as she chucked the envelope at her and slammed the door shut. Laura ducked from the envelope almost hitting her in the face and picked it up from the ground. She looked at the mailing information. She saw the handwriting and gasped: it was from her brother!
She instantly got her backpack on and went over to her window. The window was already open and she jumped out onto the fire escape. Carfeully going down the stairs down to the alleyway, she walked back towards the church which wasn't far from here. Her being 10 and walking alone in the dark wasn't safe, but her being with her drunk mom and drunk boyfriend wasn't safe either.
She made it to the church in a coupld of minutes and went around the back and in the backdoor of the Children's Area. She snuck through the baby nursery and over to the Orphange bunks. She looked around to see if there was a spare bed while seeing rows and rows of beds already occupied with backpacks and things on them. She found one near the door and placed her backpack on it and sat on the bed, opening the letter.
Dear Laura,
I hope things are going much better since my last letter to you. Just keep your head up little one, We'll see each other again, I Promise.
Father got a job in the Court of Law, I think it's because of us. He kept saying that he misses you teribbly, and wonders why you had to leave him. I know you'll see him one day. But he's been getting a little sick, I don't what it is, but I'll find out and ell you first thing.
I have a plan for us to meet, face-to-face, and not to get in trouble......
Laura looked up from her spot and smiled. To meet her brother again would be wonderful. She hasn't seen him in four years, and to finally hug him again would be the greatest thing. She kept reading on, reading the plan ina ction.
