[About 20 years ago, LA]
Jack was lying on the playground floor, some boys had jumped Marc Silverman and Jack had tried to help. Unfortunately he wasn't very strong and the boys were a lot older that Jack, he lay on the ground breathing heavily. He wasn't going to give up.
Jack looked at the bully then at Marc, he needed help and Jack wasn't going to give up on him. He was Jack's friend and no one deserved to be bullied, Jack was going to try and put a stop to it.
"It's your choice man, walk away now and you won't get your ass kicked." The bully who was over Jack said.
Jack wasn't going to let him intimidate Jack, he jumped to his feet ready to help Marc. Marc was getting pushed against the wall and punched in the stomach, he looked at the other guy who had been looking down on him.
"You should've stayed down, Jack."
As the bully said this a fist came at Jack. Jack didn't see it and when he did it was too late, Jack went down to the ground and got a further beating.
[At home later that day]
Jack stayed outside his fathers study, waiting to tell him what had happened.

(As Christian Shephard)
Christian was in his study, sorting through a load of medical stuff he had to arrange for the next day, sort of homework from the hospital because he had not completed it at work because of an extremely busy day. On top of this, he had just discovered Jack had been fighting at school from his headteacher. What an end to the day, Christian was already pissed off because of this extra work. He heard a knock on the door, "Come in." It was Jack. He sauntered in miserably with a lot of cuts and bruises on his face. Christian tried to hide his anger at the fact he had to deal with this, "So, you want to tell me what happened?"

Jack was shy, his father always intimidated him. He had never really been much of a father as he never had any trust in Jack, Jack tried so hard to do well for his father .. for his family, but nothing was good enough for this man. Jack walked in and stood in front of his father.
"A couple guys jumped Marc Silverman"
That was all Jack wanted to say on the matter. He didn't want to go into any details about it, he justed wanted to get out of this office and go to his room.

If that was all Jack had to say Christian's anger rose again. He reached for the whisky by his side and swigged a full glass he pured before Jack entered the room. "And they didn't jump you?" Christian didn't want to know what happened to this Marc Silverman, he wanted to know what happened to his son.

Jack didn't really want to answer this, they hadn't jumped him but if his father knew then he would tell him off for getting involved in fights. But that's not what he was doing ... Jack was trying to stop it all, he wanted Marc to be safe and for no one to fight.
"No"
As Jack said this he looked down in shame, this would be another reason why Jack's father will not think much of him. But if Jack had chance to explain his father would see that he was only trying to help. Jack was trying to do the right thing, but he knew his father would never see it this way. Christian never believed what Jack told him, he would take the word of a complete stranger over Jack's .. or this is how it seemed.

"No"
As Jack had said this Christian knew straight away he was hiding something from him. This theory was helped along by the fact that Jack hung his head in shame. Instead of shouting at him, demanding the truth, which he was too tired to do, he decided to make Jack feel guilty,
" I had a boy on my table today. I don't know, maybe a year younger than you. He had a bad heart. It got real hairy, real fast. Everybody's looking at your old man to make decisions. And I was able to make those decisions."
Christian stopped midway through to see how his story was effecting Jack. He couldn't see for his hung head though, but he could tell he was listening to him because he didn't move, so he carried on,
"Because I have what it takes. Don't choose, Jack, don't decide. You don't want to be a hero, you don't try and save everyone because when you fail. . . you just don't have what it takes."
Christian had finished. He hoped he had got through to Jack. By telling him he was rubbish, then he can't be let down in life, so when something great happens, he would be more greatful, but Christian wasn't going to tell Jack this.

Once again Jack's father tried to put him down, Jack was already feeling bad that he couldn't help Marc Silverman any more than he did. But now this whole speech about him not having what it takes ... this was ridiculous. Jack had tried his best to help someone and if his father couldn't see this then.. well he wasn't a very good father. Again Jack remained silent, he didn't want to say anything to anger his father anymore than he already had. So he stared at his feet and didn't dare look his father in his eyes, he just stared at the ground .. hoping he could leave soon. Hoping his father wouldn't raise his voice .. just send me to my room, Jack was thinking. ((OOC: In the ep there is no more, so we can play it however we like ))

Christian waited a few minutes to see if Jack reacted or not. And of course he didn't, no doubt processing many thoughts through his mind but not expressing them. In the end Christian decided to get things rolling, "Were you listening to me Jack?"

Jack didn't want to speak but he felt he had to, he kept his head down when he answered.
"Yes"
That was it, that was all he was going to say. Nothing more ... nothing less. Jack didn't want to stay here any longer, it was hell .. every minute .. every second .. wishing he wasn't here .. wishing he was in his room so he could sit in silence.
But no .. as usual his father wanted to really hammer the message to him, he wanted to make sure he had learned his lesson. Jack didn't learn a lesson here because his father was teaching him not to help people when they are down.

Of course, that would be the response Christian had been expecting. The answer Christian didn't really want, because that answer Jack gave symbolized that he didn't care what Christian had just said and had told Christian that answer just to get out of his study. Christian was torn between making sure Jack understood life that little better and letting him go now and learn it at a later date, only with more serious consequences. "Jack, if this happens again, I will not be held responsible for my actions. I have told you what I have to help you in life, even though you may think otherwise." Every time Christian spoke he was reminded of his own childhood when his own father would tell him the exact same thing. Only Christian did exactly the same thing as what he was expecting Jack to do, and it changed Christian's life, but he didn't want to go on thinking about it any longer. In his half-drunkeness and anger, Christian thought better than for Jack to see him lose his temper, "Get out of my sight."

Jack hated his father at this moment in time, why couldn't he be like the other dad's? Take him to the park once in a while to play catch, have some father-son time. But no .. his father was all work, work, work ... no time for his family.
Christian would never eat meals with them, he would ignore his mother and him, just sit in this office all day and do some paper work. Jack had had enough, he just wanted to yell at him, but he knew better. Jack didn't say anything but inside he was filled with rage.
As soon as Jack got the chance he left the office, when he got out the door he ran for his room. Without saying anything to his mother who was in the corridor, he just kept running trying hard not to cry.
